How does a chess tournament work?

An over-the-board chess tournament brings players together over several rounds, most often on the Swiss system: in each round, players on the same score are paired against one another. There are opens for everyone, championships, cups and team competitions.

Games are played at a time control announced in advance — classical, rapid or blitz — and the results count towards players' Elo ratings.

Playing a tournament: membership, entry and fees

For most opens you do not need to be a member in advance: entry is usually available online or on site on the day of the tournament, and entry fees are generally modest, with reductions for juniors and titled players.
